How to Prepare Herbs in The Blood of Dawnwalker
Early in the prologue, Coen’s mother Esme falls ill and you must prepare a herbal medicine. The game gives you two preparation choices and no second chance to reread the recipe note — this is the exact combination.
Where to Get the Herbs
- The herbs come from Anca the herbalist, whose hut stands outside the village of Laslea in the Vale Sangora.
- If Anca is not at her hut, use Focus Mode and follow her trail to the riverbank — she does not leave the area.
- She charges 50 denarii. You can haggle to half price, or tell her you cannot pay and settle later — the quest never fails over money.
- She hands you a physical recipe note, “Instructions from Anca”, which lands in your inventory.
The Two Recipe Choices
- Water temperature: use hot water — not boiling, not cold. Hot-but-not-boiling is the correct option.
- Herb amount: add three spoonfuls — not one and not two.
Hot water + 3 spoonfuls of herbs
Giving Esme the Medicine
- When the preparation choices appear on screen you cannot open the recipe note anymore — memorize it beforehand.
- Esme refuses the bitter medicine; choose to tell her a story to get her to drink it.
- Correct medicine: Esme survives the Blood Mass with Brencis — weak, but alive.
What Happens if You Get It Wrong
Spoiler: the failure consequence
With a wrong preparation (or no medicine in time), Esme reacts badly to the ritual bloodletting at the Mass, draws attention to herself, and Brencis deems her blood too weak — the vrakhiri kill her by devouring her.
After the Quest: Time Costs & Page-Turner
- After receiving the herbs, staying with Anca (choosing “Gladly, I’ve missed it too”) triggers the optional Page-Turner quest and costs two time segments.
- Leaving immediately costs one time segment instead.
- Both roads are valid — decide whether two segments are worth the optional quest rewards on your current day count.
